Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a long-term brain condition that develops from repeated use of opioids, such as prescription pain medications (like oxycodone or hydrocodone) or illegal drugs (like heroin and Fentanyl). OUD affects the brain’s reward, motivation, learning, and memory systems, leading people to seek opioids for pleasure or relief. Like other chronic conditions, OUD can involve periods of relapse and recovery.
